Preparations for the BVI Poker Run 2015 are underway and expectations on this, its 14th anniversary, are high. More than 300 boats from Puerto Rico, Miami, and the USVI's will head out to the BVI's to participate in the event on Memorial Day weekend. "It is the biggest Poker Run up to date," expressed Nick Willis, manager of Leverick Bay Resort.
PRIZES!! PRIZES!! PRIZES!!
The Leverick Bay Poker Run is the most exciting and anticipated nautical event in the British Virgin Islands. Why? Because of the PEOPLE (over 2,000 of them), the BOATS (over 300 anticipated) and THE PRIZES, totaling over $15,000! Friends and families from all over the Caribbean and the U.S. unite for one unforgettable day! This year marks the 13th annual Poker Run and every year, participation has grown by nearly 30%. It is simply the best event for the boating community in the BVI's.
This year's prizes include up to $15,000 in cash prizes for 1st, 2nd, and 3rd place. There will also be special prizes for 4th, 5th, and 6th places.
Additional prizes for:
The best poker hand wins the Grand Prize: big money based on the total number of entries. There also are generous prizes for the 2nd and 3rd best hands. The entrance fee money goes towards the prize money, so the more boats the bigger the prizes. More than one hand can be purchased per boat and per person to increase your chances of winning. Last year, CBS Caribbean’s Joey Stevens and Bob, his famous parrot, retransmitted the whole event live from Leverick Bay. The great and charismatic personality of Sir Richard Branson couldn’t be missing, this time appearing dressed as a lemur with his Necker crew, adding his original touch to the event. Sir Branson has become a BVI icon and his efforts to preserve the planet and protect the species among other projects, are well known in the area.
The prizes were appropriately doled out among the participating islands, namely the BVI, USVI and Puerto Rico. Everybody won at the Leverick Bay Poker Run 2014:
Donations were also huge last year:
The Poker Run organizing committee and official staff want to thank everyone who participated and showed up to be a part of the fun, from the locals, to the vessels, and of course, the sponsors. It all adds up and contributes to make this event a huge success: Puerto del Rey Marina, The British Virgin Islands, Nature’s Little Secrets, La Regata el Periódico Náutico de Puerto Rico, Pussy Natural Energy Drink, Rendezvous Bar, Mr. Nice Guy, Allied Car & Truck Rental, Medalla Light, Fish ‘N Lime, Don Q, Lime, One Caribbean, CBS Puerto Rico, Wally Castro Marine, JY Harbour View Marina, Pirates Bight at Normal Island, Leverick Bay Marina and JL Marketing Firm. A heartfelt thank you from The Leverick Bay Poker Run committee and just wait and see, 2015 will be the biggest Poker Run yet!
Upon first conceiving the Leverick Bay Poker Run as an annual celebration, one of the purposes was to eventually help benefit charities with a sizable amount of funds and improve quality of life for all BVI residents. As the Poker Run launched back in 2002, we simply aimed for fostering a feeling of community through a fun activity and hoped it would continue to grow and gather enough support to keep going through the years.
Now entering our 14th year, excited and humbled by the great success of the Leverick Bay Poker Run, we are proud to announce the bestowed amount to charities continues to increase year after year due to the many people and businesses that support us. For 2015, we expect an even larger participation given the new raffles and opportunities to win, a development that will also help increase the bequeathed amount for BVI charities. Chances to win a cash prize are better than ever and we encourage everyone to join this year's run.
At this time, we've been able to confer over $100,000 to local charities and expect this trend to keep on for years to come thanks to the unwavering support of the boating community and all those who enjoy a good nautical activity. Some of the local charities who've benefited from proceeds include The Virgin Gorda Diabetes Association, the Virgin Gorda Animal Rescue, the Virgin Gorda Track Team, The Virgin Gorda Cars Association, and the Red Cross, among others.
2002- First Poker Run, 15 boats said they would attend ; only 12 showed up, 3 of them from Puerto Rico. From there on, the event grew in popularity. Five years later, in 2007, the event had grown to 80 boats. In 2009, thanks to the involvement of JL Marketing Firm, the event doubled its size to 121 boats. The estimate for this year's 14th Anniversary is around 200-300 boats and 2,000 participants.
